While living in Brooklyn, I noticed the landscape shifting around me. The city I moved to for artistic experimentation and a “color outside the lines” attitude is quickly being replaced by restrictive rules and million-dollar luxury condos. As I see it, this resulting erosion in culture is best illustrated by the Showtime dancers who I always thought best embodied the carefree New York spirit… But who will now get arrested if they’re caught dancing on the subway.

Our film “EROSION” is a poetic expression of this changing landscape of Brooklyn and the resulting loss of culture. This was a personal project and a labor of love – Shot on free weekends and weekdays over the course of five months. With no budget – but a generous donation of time and equipment from Tim Sessler and other collaborators – our small two-man crew begged, borrowed, and stole every shot to create the video you see here…

EROSION is a short film by Brandon Bloch, Tim Sessler and Brandon Bray – starring Dayrome “Bad Day” Wright, Kester “Flexx” Estephane, Anthony “Laiden” John and Makaveli Qu.

To showcase it’s most ambitious project to date – a $12M townhouse in Greenwich Village – William Reue Architecture wanted to do more than just take static photos of empty rooms. I was approached with the challenge of creating a film that highlighted the space in an artistic way. In collaboration with a rising-star choreographer, Sean Roschman, and a dedicated team of dancers, we crafted an emotional performance to bring the space to life. Then, working with a trusted camera crew, led by DP genius Tim Sessler, we captured the performance in a fluid single-take style. The final film puts the viewer in the position of a fourth dancer, moving around and through the space on a journey that far exceeds your typical real estate tour.

Clinton Van Gemert embodies the Brooklyn spirit better than anyone I know. As a multi-talented artist and craftsman, you’ll find him putting up wheatpaste posters or playing music on a subway platform.

For his new business – BROOKLYNTERIORS – Clint is bringing the wheatpaste aesthetic indoors as handmade wallpaper. I collaborated with Clint to create the launch video for his new business in a way that pays homage to the step-by-step assembly-line process that goes into wallpapering a room.

The process of screenprinting, hanging the paper to dry, pasting it onto a wall – it all has a rhythm to it. Clint being a musician means his metronome and upright bass was sitting nearby. We recorded the natural sounds of the screenprinting process, and some simple bass melody, and layered it onto the timeline to create a fun, rhythmic piece to introduce BROOKLYNTERIORS to the world.

On a recent production trip to New Orleans, our crew found itself looking for something to do after our video shoot was postponed by rain.

Driving through the Garden District, our silver-maned DP, Fernando, spotted a barber shop and mentioned that he could probably use a good haircut. I guess he was looking a bit scruffy after a few months in Ecuador.

With a van full of camera equipment and a crew eager to shoot something, we decided we couldn’t just let Fernando enjoy a fine haircut while we sat idly by. Let’s shoot this thing!

We jumped out of the van, with two 7Ds in hand, and burst through the door of the unsuspecting Barber Shop asking if we could not only get a haircut, but also document the whole process. The answer from the accommodating staff was a resounding “uhh… I don’t see why not”.

The incomparable Tim Sessler and I spent the next twenty minutes in an improvisational two-camera shoot – trying not to get in each other’s way – while our skillful barber trimmed up Fernando to the tunes of New Orleans’ own Little Freddy King playing on the shop radio.

It was the perfect antidote to our rainy day blues and a great way to experience a slice of New Orleans culture.

Anatomy of a Social Media-Based Rebranding Campaign…

Walk around Washington, DC in the summertime, and everywhere you look… tourists wearing “I Heart DC” t-shirts. For shame! Of course, this isn’t an original design. It’s a straight ripoff of Milton Glaser’s famous “I Heart NY” design from the 1970’s. Well, this is no longer the 1970’s. And DC isn’t NY. So why does the “I Heart DC” design represent our city?

This was the thinking behind (re)DC: The Tourist T-Shirt – A curated competition we launched through ReadysetDC this summer. We pulled together some of DC’s most talented graphic designers with a challenge: Create an original icon that proudly represents the real DC… one that tourists and natives alike would be proud to wear.

The 12 submitted designs were featured on ReadysetDC where the DC public had an opportunity to vote on their favorite design. The design with the most votes would be crowned “DC’s New Official Tourist T-Shirt”.

The campaign launched, and immediately caught the attention of DC’s media outlets and blogosphere. The frenzy of attention led to record-breaking traffic on ReadysetDC.com – and nearly 3,000 votes later, the winner was chosen.

The winning design was created by none other than Natako himself (the very designer of this site)… We printed 1,000 stickers and a limited edition first run of 51 t-shirts, which were sold at the tourist-themed launch party.

This new icon for Washington, DC has since been gifted to the public under a Creative Commons license. And our desire is to have it reinterpreted as it becomes part of the fabric of our city.

Anatomy of a Viral Video // “Canon 7D vs. Barbie Video Girl” has been over 475,000 times since its launch in August, 2010.

The video was originally created as a little inside joke. But a few well-placed emails and tweets to the right influential blogs quickly led to it being embedded and shared around the world. In the end, the video was embedded on dozens of top blogs (Gizmodo, Engadget, NY Magazine) and Tweeted by WIRED, Guy Kawasaki, and Barbie herself. But the coolest development had to be when Canon corporate contacted me to ask permission to show Canon 7D vs. Barbie at their retail conference in the UK. /// As seen on…

Today, I launch my new portfolio site.

It’s the result of a lot of collaborative Sunday afternoons and a lot of genius-level designing andcoding by my friend and fellow artist, Alex Slater at Natako. Alex approaches each website he designs as a new creative challenge, customizing each detail of the design until it’s just right for the subject. His favorite word is “couture”. It’s clear he lives and breathes art and design, and I’m humbled that he was able to craft my site before he runs off to Crispin Porter + Bogusky, or some such place.

With this new site, I’m marking the beginning of a new era. My work has never really had a true home of its own, having been hosted for too long on a free blogspot page. It’s interesting how the same portfolio placed in a new shell changes the look and feel of my work. Some things look older, some things look fresher. Either way, this site is gonna push me to keep evolving and growing as a media maker.

This is also a convergence of mediums – video, photography, and social media – all in one place. My approach to media is evolving along with innovations in technology. I feel fortunate to be working in an era like this where we’re able to produce, shoot, edit, and distribute HD video on a global scale with the tools in a small backpack. Once you have an idea, there are no more excuses for not making it a reality.

So please look around, bookmark my new portfolio, and check back from time to time to see how things are shifting and evolving. I hope you enjoy watching my work as much as I enjoy producing it.

– Brandon
